Antibiotics are a very common type of medication - they also happen to be quite misunderstood. While they are effective at treating many bacterial infections, antibiotics will not treat viral illness (such as the cold and flu) and have been overused for years. Because of this overuse, we are now dealing with the problem of antibiotic resistance. This means that the antibiotics we have used for years are no longer effective at treating the bacteria they were designed to kill.

Generic Zithromax

Generic Zithromax is an antibiotic related to erythromycin. It is prescribed for adults to treat certain mild to moderate skin infections; upper and lower respiratory tract infections, including pharyngitis (strep throat), tonsillitis, sinus infections, worsening of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Zithromax capsules and suspension contain the active ingredient azithromycin, which is a type of medicine called a macrolide antibiotic. (NB. Azithromycin is also available without a brand name, ie as the generic medicine.) Azithromycin is used to treat infections caused by bacteria. Azithromycin works by preventing bacteria from producing proteins that are essential to them. Without these proteins the bacteria cannot grow, replicate and increase in numbers. Azithromycin therefore stops the spread of infection and remaining bacteria are killed by the body's immune system or eventually die. Azithromycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is active against a wide variety of bacteria that cause a wide variety of infections. Azithromycin may be used to treat infections of the upper or lower airways, skin or soft tissue, or ears. It is also used to treat the sexually-transmitted infection chlamydia. To make sure the bacteria causing an infection are susceptible to azithromycin your doctor may take a tissue sample, for example a swab from the throat or skin. What is it used for? Bacterial infection of the lungs and airways (chest or lower respiratory tract infection, eg pneumonia, bronchitis). Bacterial infections of the nasal passages, sinuses or throat (upper respiratory tract infection, eg sinusitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis). Bacterial infections of the middle ear (otitis media). Bacterial infections of the skin or soft tissue. Chlamydia. Mild or moderate typhoid due to multiple-antibacterial-resistant organisms (unlicensed use). Warning! Zithromax capsules should be taken at least one hour before or two hours after food. Zithromax suspension can be taken with food. Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, it is important that you finish the prescribed course of this antibiotic medicine, even if you feel better or it seems the infection has cleared up. Stopping the course early increases the chance that the infection will come back and that the bacteria will grow resistant to the antibiotic. Broad-spectrum antibiotics can sometimes cause inflammation of the bowel (colitis). For this reason, if you get diarrhoea that becomes severe or persistent or contains blood or mucus, either during or after taking this medicine, you should consult your doctor immediately. All antibiotics can sometimes result in overgrowth of organisms that are not susceptible to the antibiotic, in particular fungi. You should let your doctor know if you think you have developed any other infections while you are taking this medicine, so that they can be treated appropriately.
