Periactin (Cyproheptadine)

Generic name: Periactin

Active substance:

cyproheptadine hydrochloride
to 40 mg per 100 ml of syrup, or 4 mg tablet

Indications:

Acute and chronic urticaria, serum sickness, vasomotor rhinitis, ekzematoidny dermatitis, contact dermatitis, neuro-dermatitis, angioedema, insect bites, carcinoid syndrome, headache, vascular origin (migraine, histamine kefalgiya). Lack of appetite of various origins (neurotic anorexia, idiopathic anorexia) and exhaustion (state postinfection, a period of convalescence, chronic disease, hyperthyroidism).

Contraindications:

glaucoma, the tendency to edema, fluid retention, and pregnancy.

Dosage:

For adults: The usual initial daily dose of 12 mg (3 times 1 tablet or 3 times in 1 baby spoon syrup).
Treatment of chronic urticaria: 6 mg / day (3 times 4 / 2 tablets or 3 times a teaspoon of syrup).
In the case of acute migraine: a pill or a baby spoon syrup. If the headache does not stop after 0,5 hours to re-take one tablet or a child a spoonful of syrup. Within 4-6 hours maximum dose - 8 mg peritola.
Maintenance treatment: usually enough to 3 tablets a day.

If there is no appetite from 3 to 6 years the dose is 6 mg (3 ? 1 / 2 tablet or 3 times in 1 baby spoon syrup), the older - the dose should not exceed 8 mg a day.

Side effects:

Most often observed drowsiness, rarely requiring cessation of treatment. Sometimes: dry mouth, mental confusion, ataxia, visual hallucinations, dizziness, nausea, skin rashes, anxiety, headaches.

Drug Interactions:

Should be prescribed with caution:
- Painkillers and sleeping pills (potentiates their effect.)

Warning:

In order to reduce the sedative effect at the beginning of therapy, the drug should be administered in the evening, after a meal.
Treatment of children and the elderly should be done with caution because of hypersensitivity to antihistamines.
